It was always done instantly and the merged card had the combined credit limit of both. This was the story, atleast for Citibank, Chase and as far as I remember, Bank of America.

India Fund Inc. rights offer and Scottrade

HSBC Direct now offers 5.05% APY

Amboy has raised them to 5.05% and Presidential Bank has them at 5.12%!!
